As of April 12, 2026 Canada is introducing updated cosmetic regulations that require more transparency around fragrance allergens in products like handmade soap. Additional requirements will also be coming into effect later this August.
These updates are designed to help consumers make more informed choices, particularly those who may have sensitivities or allergies to certain fragrance components. Rather than simply listing "fragrance," "essential oil," or "parfum," makers may now be required to disclose specific naturally occurring fragrance components when they are present above certain thresholds.
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been spending a lot of time researching these new requirements. This has included reviewing supplier allergen sheets, SDS documents, government guidance, and building my own spreadsheets to better understand how these components appear in my soaps.
While this process initially felt overwhelming, I care deeply about this craft and about being as transparent and responsible as possible. My goal is to follow these new rules carefully, continue learning, and provide clear, helpful information about the products I make.
